From time to time GuamDiary recommends books.
Christopher de Bellaigue knows his west Asia. Of note is the publication in February 2012 of ‘Patriot of Persia: Muhammad Mossadegh and a very British Coup’.
We encourage those who read GuamDiary to read it. For even today the US and its allies have not absorbed the lessons of that 1954 coup nor the deep stream of Iranian nationalist feeling that prime minister Muhammad Mossadegh tapped by nationalising the Anglo Iranian Oil Company.
And that drama is being played out today with sanctions against Iran, as well as threats of war emanating from Israel and the US.
The US CIA boasts about it, and Fritzroy Maclean wrote an interesting account of his engineering the coup that overthrew Mossadegh, if you want to know the boastful saga from the ‘winning side’.
